Robert Knight's book examines how the 60,000 strong Slovene community in the Austrian borderland province of Carinthia continued to suffer in the wake of Nazism's fall. It explores how and why Nazi values continued to be influential in a post-Nazi era in postwar Central Europe and provides valuable insights into the Cold War as a point of interaction of local, national and international politics. Though Austria was re-established in 1945 as Hitler's 'first victim', many Austrians continued to share principles which had underpinned the Third Reich. Long treated as both inferior and threatening prior to the rise of Hitler and then persecuted during his time in power, the Slovenes of Carinthia were prevented from equality of schooling by local Nazis in the years that followed World War Two, behavior that was tolerated in Vienna and largely ignored by the rest of the world. Slavs in Post-Nazi Austria uses this vital case study to discuss wider issues relating to the stubborn legacy of Nazism in postwar Europe and to instill a deeper understanding of the interplay between collective and individual (liberal) rights in Central Europe. PREFACE THE object in the present volume has been to give a brief description of such birds of the world as are usually to be seen in zoological collections and in muscurns, together with some of the most significant and striking facts in their life-histories. To include even a very short account of each of the fourteen Fhou sand species known to exist, was clearly impracticable within the limits of a book of this size. It has been thought desirable, therefore, to give special attention to the birds of America, to corresponding species and allied forms found in Great Britain and on the Continent of Europe, and to certain of the more remarkable and interesting birds of other countries, This work is based upon one by TV. P. Pycraft, well known among ornithologists as a systematist and bird anatomist, and now in charge of the Depadment of Birds in the British Rfuseum. Use has been made of a Iarge part of his admirable Introduction, dealing with the evolution and structure of the bird. Portions of it that were considered too technical to be readiIy understood bp young readers were simplified as much as possible, other portions were omitted as b - e ing of - comparatively little value, and a few additions were iii iv PREFACE made. The general arrangement has been adhered to throughout. The interest in birds is widespread and constantly growing, and it is hoped that the use of this volume as a reference-book will lead young readers to further study of this most fascinating subject. This book questions the prevalent assumption that ethnicity and nationalist politics had nothing to do with the Cold War and that, far from being 'frozen' until the fall of communism, they remained central to the conflict in Europe. Leading scholars bring their understanding of particular regions to bear on the wider issue of why ethnic explanations were written out of the discourse and whether this was a failure on the part of Western observers. This in turn has led to an overly simple understanding of power flowing downwards, from superpower to nation state and from state to society. Engaging with key thinkers such as Gaddis, Moynihan and Adam Roberts this collection ultimately allows such speculation to be replaced by historical research and bridges the gap between 'high politics' and ethnic concerns.
